Music Video Treatment

Requirements:
Students will shoot a music video that is no longer than five minutes.
Music videos must have a concept,theme, or story (not 100% lip-syncing).
You can have class time on November 4 and November 6. You of course can shoot outside of class.
Video should have at least one eight-shot sequence.
Raw Footage is due on November 9.

Students must turn in a one-page typed treatment to the classes period1 folder. Please use the naming convention.

Most videos have an interesting concept such as a fake TV show, a backwards video, a dance video, a live performance video, or simply an interesting story. Your treatment should explain in detail your concept and how you plan to make this concept come to life. Your treatment should answer the following questions:
1. What is your story or concept in great detail? Don't forget costumes, editing and shooting style etc. Your answer should be 4-5 sentences.
2. Who are you working with on this project (inside or outside of class)?
3. When will you shoot?
4. Do you need class time to shoot?
5. What song are you using? How long is the song?


Videos must have one at least one eight-shot sequence.
Storyboards of the sequence will be required.

Videos shots must use proper technique discussed in class: good headroom, proper white-balance, leading the subject, focus, and steadiness. Grading of these shots will be more difficult than the last project.

Friday Music Video Activity

Today I want you to watch 10 of the 12 music videos listed below. You pick which ten to watch.
I want you to answer a series of questions (in complete sentences) after you watch each video. Please use Text Edit or WORD for this assignment. Please drop your assignment into the STAFF server Period 1 at the end of the period. This is due today and late work will not be accepted.

The questions to answer for each video:

1. What is the name and artist for the video?

Short Video Assignment

Directions:

Make a 3-4 minute-movie that showcases the camera shots and skills you have learned in Video Production the first few weeks.

Requirements

Videos must be creative and original.

All shots must be white balanced.

Story must have a beginning, middle, end and contain dialogue.

All shots must be in focus.

All shots must be steady with proper headroom.

You must have at least one six shot sequence. I will explain this in class.

You must include the Rule of Thirds, Leading the Subject, and Framing where appropriate.

You can work with one other person n this project, but you each need to edit your own version of the video.

The following shots must be used at least once to receive an A grade :

CU, MCU, MS, LS, ELS, Steady Trucking, Steady Panning, POV, Steady Dolly, and Heads in Tails Out.

I am looking forward to seeing your videos. I will provide you with class time to shoot and edit your projects. Therefore, please try to plan ahead as much as possible. For example, if you are shooting at school remember to bring all your costumes and props etc. Always remember your tapes as well.

Wednesday 30th: Finish watching sequences. 45 minutes to work on scripts. Scripts are due on Friday.Watch short movie examples.
Friday 2nd: All class shooting day or JAWS.
Monday 5th: All class shooting day or JAWS. Short Movie raw footage is due at 9:25.
Wednesday 7th: Edit short movies.
Monday the 12th: Edit short movies. Create music in Garageband.
Wednesday the 14th: Edit short movies.
Friday the 16th: Finish editing short movies.

Sequence Assignment

12-20 Shots of a continuous action

Remember to white balance and keep the camera steady.
Shoot in manual mode and focus.
Avoid jump cuts and continuity errors. Videos with jump cuts will not be accepted.

Please include:

• Cutaway Shot
• Insert Shot
• As many of the other shots you learned last week as you can: OTS, trucking, POV, Heads in/Tails Out, MCU, MS, LS, Pan, and Tilt etc.

Finally, make this sequence interesting to watch.

Exporting to Quicktime and Dropping In Server

Exporting From Final Cut to Quicktime

File>Export>Quicktime Movie>
Save the video using the naming convention and save it in the movies folder.

Next, control-click (right-click) on the file in your movies folder and select get info'. Please make sure that everything under details and ownerships and permissions is set to 'read-write'.

Next, log onto to Vidstore.shorelineschools.org and drop it in the period one or four folder.

Final Cut Editing Assignment

• Put all your shots in order on the timeline
• edit out the shots you don't want
• make sure all shots are white balanced, steady, and in focus
• add Fade in and Fade Out
• add music
• One video effect added
• credits at end over black
• titles for each shot
• Make sure you have all of the shots for the proper 5-10 second length.

Importing Video Into Final Cut Pro

• Turn on camera
• Put camera into VCR mode
  
• Rewind Tape
• Cue it to Correct Spot
• Plug In Firewire
• Open Final Cut
• Go to File>Log and Capture
• Hit Play on Camera
• Hit Capture Now on Final Cut
• Press esc to get out of Log and Capture
• Your clips will show up in the upper left hand corner of the screen in the clip bin.

Your first assignment this semester is a short movie. It does not HAVE to be three minutes in length, but I think three-five minutes would be optimal. Your homework this weekend will be to brainstorm your idea: decide on actors, locations, makeup, and classmates you would like to work with.
You will write treatments on Tuesday.
On Tuesday we will also assign SCNN duties.

Hints for Success in this class

1. Use your time at home with a camera wisely. Having your own camera is very helpful, but if you need to check out a camera from me make sure you plan your video shoot ahead of time.
2. Do not rely on your friends. Your friends are not receiving a grade and therefore are not as motivated as you are.
3. Do not wait until the last minute to shoot. Procrastination will hurt you in this class.
4. Shoot multiple takes of your shots from different angles so you have more to work with when you edit. It is highly recommend to shoot a wide "master shot" of the whole scence and then shoot close-ups after.
5. Make every shot count. Do not shoot random footage.
